Understanding the Lash Growth Cycle
Lash extensions’ longevity depends on multiple factors, including proper aftercare and—most importantly—the natural lash growth cycle. Understanding how your lashes grow and shed can help you maintain better retention and make the most of your extensions.
The Three Phases of the Lash Growth Cycle
Your natural lashes go through a continuous cycle of growth, transition, and shedding. Since lash extensions are applied to individual natural lashes, their retention is directly affected by where each lash is in its cycle.
1. Anagen Phase (The Growth Phase) of the Lash Growth Cycle
- This is the active growth stage when new lashes are forming.
- Lashes in this phase are shorter, finer, and not yet fully developed.
- Since they are still growing, they are not ideal for extensions, as the weight of the extension can strain them, leading to premature shedding.
2. Catagen Phase (The Transition Phase) of the Lash Growth Cycle
- Lashes in this phase are at their strongest, having stopped growing but not yet shedding.
- This is the best phase for applying lash extensions because the lashes are at full strength and will hold extensions the longest.
- However, if a lash in the catagen phase sheds, the extension will fall with it, which is part of the natural process.
3. Telogen Phase (The Shedding Phase) of the Lash Growth Cycle
- This is the final stage, where the lash is no longer attached to the follicle and is preparing to shed.
- Lashes in this phase naturally fall out, making retention of extensions on these lashes short-lived.
- Losing 2-5 lashes per day is completely normal, but seasonal changes (like fall shedding) can accelerate the process.
How Lash Growth Phases in the Lash Growth Cycle Affect Retention
- Since your natural lashes are all in different phases at any given time, some extensions will shed sooner than others.
- Lash techs strategically apply extensions to lashes in the strongest (catagen) phase to maximize retention.
- Regular infills (typically every 2-3 weeks) help replace lost extensions and maintain a full look.
Tips to Improve Lash Retention
- Follow Proper Aftercare – Avoid water, steam, glycol, and oil-based products for the first 24 hours to allow the adhesive to fully cure.
- Be Gentle – Rubbing your eyes or sleeping on your face can cause premature shedding.
- Schedule Regular Infills – Since lashes naturally shed, consistent refills help maintain fullness.
- Use a Lash-Safe Cleanser – Keeping your lashes clean prevents oil buildup, which can break down the adhesive.
- Consider Seasonal Shedding – Your retention may fluctuate during fall and spring due to increased lash shedding.
