How Long Do Lash Extensions Last?

How long do lash EXTENSIONS last?

One of the most frequently asked question we receive is “How long do lash extensions last?” Let’s break it down to help you set realistic expectations and get the most out of your lash investment.

The Average Lifespan of Lash Extensions

The typical lifespan of lash extensions (meaning how long it takes to shed all lash extensions from the natural lashes) is 4 to 6 weeks, but this largely depends on your natural lash cycle and how well you care for them. Here’s why:

  1. Natural Lash Shedding: Your natural lashes follow a growth cycle, which lasts around 6 to 8 weeks. Lash extensions are attached to individual natural lashes, so as your natural lashes shed, the extensions fall out with them. Most people shed 1 to 5 natural lashes daily.
  2. Extension Adhesive Longevity: The adhesive used in lash extensions is designed to hold securely for several weeks. However, humidity, oil exposure, and how well the extensions are applied can influence how long they stay in place.

Think of lash extension fill-ins similarly to how you think about nails. As your nails grow out, you need to visit your nail tech, the longer you wear your nails, the more likely the adhesive will wear down. Just as these factors affect your nails… think of your lash extensions

Factors That Affect Lash Extension Retention

Several factors can influence how long your lash extensions last:

  1. Aftercare Routine: Proper aftercare is essential. Extensions last longer when you clean them regularly with a lash-safe cleanser, avoid oil-based products, and refrain from rubbing or tugging your lashes. Check out our lash extension aftercare blog here
  2. Lifestyle: Activities such as swimming, saunas, or high-sweat workouts can break down the adhesive faster. If you’re someone who’s active or frequently exposed to humidity, your extensions may need more frequent touch-ups.
  3. Natural Lash Health: Strong, healthy natural lashes provide a better foundation for extensions. Weak or brittle lashes may not hold extensions as well, potentially shortening their lifespan.
  4. Application Technique: The skill and expertise of your lash artist play a crucial role. A professional lash technician will ensure that extensions are applied correctly and with the proper adhesive for optimal retention.

How to Extend the Life of Your Lash Extensions

To keep your lashes looking gorgeous for as long as possible, follow these tips:

  1. Avoid Water and Steam for 24 Hours: After your appointment, allow the adhesive to fully cure by keeping your lashes dry for at least 24 hours.
  2. Use Lash-Safe Products: Only use oil-free cleansers and makeup removers to avoid breaking down the adhesive. Invest in a lash-safe cleanser for cleaning your lashes daily.
  3. Be Gentle: Avoid rubbing your eyes or pulling at your extensions. When cleansing, pat your lashes dry gently instead of rubbing them with a towel. Avoid using anything cotton as it can catch and pull lashes out.
  4. Sleep on Your Back: If you’re a side or stomach sleeper, your lashes may experience more friction against your pillow. Consider using a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce wear and tear.
  5. Regular Fills: To maintain a full lash look, schedule fills every 2 to 3 weeks. This ensures that any extensions that have shed are replaced, keeping your lashes looking their best.

Signs It’s Time for a Fill or Removal

Your lashes may need attention when:

  • They’re looking sparse or uneven.
  • More than 50% of the extensions have shed.
  • Your natural lashes are growing out.

At this point, you’ll want to book a fill to replenish your extensions or schedule a removal to avoid damage to your natural lashes.

Final Thoughts

Lash extensions are an investment in your beauty routine, and with proper care, they can last several weeks. Understanding the factors that influence retention and following a diligent aftercare routine will help you maximize their lifespan and enjoy a beautiful lash look every day.
