Understanding Fall Lash Shed: What You Need to Know

As we transition from Summer to sweater weather and pumpkin spice season, we approach the fall lash shed. If you’ve noticed your clients experiencing more lash loss than usual during this season, you’re not alone. Let’s dive into the science behind fall lash shed, what it means for your clients, and how you can help them navigate it.

What is Fall Lash Shed?

Fall lash shed is a natural process where people experience increased eyelash loss during autumn. This phenomenon is similar to how animals shed their fur to prepare for winter. While it may seem alarming to those who are unfamiliar with it, fall lash shed is a normal part of the hair growth cycle influenced by seasonal changes.

The Science Behind Fall Lash Shed

Our hair, including eyelashes, goes through a continuous cycle of growth, rest, and shedding. This cycle can be influenced by various factors such as hormones, weather, and overall health. During fall, the change in daylight hours and temperature can trigger hormonal changes that affect the hair growth cycle. The decrease in sunlight leads to a drop in melatonin levels, which can in turn affect the hair’s growth phase (anagen phase) and shedding phase (telogen phase).

How to Manage Fall Lash Shed

1. Educate Your Clients:

One of the most important steps is to inform your clients BEFOREHAND about the phenomenon. Reassure them that it’s a temporary and natural process. Understanding that this is a seasonal change can help alleviate any concerns they might have.

2. Adjust Appointment Schedules:

During the fall months, consider recommending shorter intervals between lash fill appointments. This will help maintain the fullness of their lash extensions and prevent noticeable gaps.

3. Focus on Lash Health:

Encourage your clients to prioritize lash health. Recommend lash serums or conditioners that can strengthen their natural lashes. A well-nourished lash line is more resilient to shedding.

4. Customize Lash Extensions:

Opt for lighter lash extensions during this period. Lighter extensions put less strain on the natural lashes, reducing the risk of premature shedding. Additionally, using shorter and thinner extensions can help maintain a natural look even if some lashes shed.

5. Maintain a Humid Environment:

As the weather cools down, indoor heating can dry out the air, which can affect lash adhesives and the lashes themselves. Using a humidifier in your salon can help maintain the right humidity levels, ensuring better retention of lash extensions. Track your humidity levels in the room using a hygrometer. I have linked the cute little Hygrometer I have used for years and a similar Humidifier to mine that allows for adjusting humidity levels to balance your environment.

What to Tell Your Clients

It’s crucial to communicate openly with your clients about what they might experience during the fall lash shed. Here are a few key points to cover:

  • Reassure them that it’s temporary: Let them know that the increased shedding is a short-term phase and their lash growth will return to normal.
  • Offer practical advice: Provide tips on how to care for their lashes during this time, including gentle cleansing and avoiding excessive rubbing or tugging.
  • Highlight the importance of aftercare, and booking ahead for about a month.

Fall lash shed is a natural and temporary process influenced by seasonal changes. By understanding the science behind it and implementing strategies to manage it, you can help your clients maintain beautiful lashes throughout the season. Open communication, proper education, and tailored lash care routines will ensure that both you and your clients navigate through the season with ease and confidence.
