How to become a lash artist

So you want to be a lash artist?

I can tell you from experience, it is the most fulfilling and rewarding career I have had to date. Becoming a business owner and following my passions is hard work, but unlike anything else.

I’m sure that’s a huge reason why you want to pursue becoming a lash extension expert and artist yourself!

In this post I will be sharing everything you need to know to get started:

– From getting trained
– Getting your very first client.
– Promoting and gaining your stride in this industry

After reading this article, you can follow these steps and links to becoming a pro lash artist, and you will be ready to go.

We understand that when you start to consider a career as a lash artist it can be a bit overwhelming & lets be honest… There are no clear steps. That is.. until now.

Bookmark this post to follow the steps to go from beginning to lash business!

Tip #1 – SAVE YOUR MONEY! Take the lash course first!

First things first, we recommend taking an introductory lash course, or as many call them, lash certifications! This will get you behind that chair and an understanding of the technical skills that go into taking on clients.

Why take a lash course? We recommend this before enrolling in school for your license because it will save you money!

Esthetician school and or Cosmetology schools can be tens of thousands of dollars. While, lash courses can be hundreds. This will save you time and money.

Who doesn’t want to do that?!

Learning this way first allows you to get into lashing and figure out if it’s really something you would enjoy or not. The course will also allow you to learn the specific skills and set you up with an at home practice kit to keep learning throughout school.

Just remember to check the legal requirements to practice where you live. Don’t charge clients to practice on them at first. In order to help cut costs, have them pay the cost of the product only or tip if they like!

However, remember that you’re using them in place of the dummy head to practice and they are sitting there for hours for you.

Make sure to research the courses in your area and online. Many lash companies have mobile courses if you don’t want to take on the expense of traveling to them.

Be on the look out for Siroki Lash Studio courses coming soon join our waitlist here!

Tip #2 – Research the legal requirements in your area!

Lash artists have different certifications they can earn but the legal requirements differ depending upon the location you will be practicing.

Pay attention to these and get your proper licensing to make sure you are abiding by the laws in your area. This can save you thousands of dollars by avoiding fines, choosing the correct path to education, and helping you narrow down what you need to spend money on for your license. Some states have recently changed their legal requirements so definitely look into this!

We never recommend skipping this step especially because we don’t recommend you putting in time and effort into building a clientele just to get shut down by the Department of Business and Professional Regulations. In Florida you can find more information by filling out the form with the state here: https://www2.myfloridalicense.com/contactus/?menue=true trust me, they are really just here to help.

“To create something exceptional, your mindset must be relentlessly focused on the smallest details”

– Giorgio Armani

Tip #3 – Do NOT try to Keep Up with the Kardashians!

Many new artists feel pressure to keep up appearances and push themselves to take on financial responsibility, that is unnecessary. Don’t! Just start small.

At the beginning of your lash journey practice makes perfect offer affordable sets with your kit you got from the online or in person course.

Offer free sets to your first few models as they will be sitting for hours until you get the hang of lashing. Begin to charge for your product so you’re not going broke just to practice.

Keep costs as low as you can by lashing on location or from home until you are confident enough to start charging and save up before investing in leasing a space. At Siroki Studio we offer daily rental rates for people who want to build their book of business but are not ready for a suite of their own yet! Find out more here!

Tip #4 – Content, Content, Content!

EVERYTHING IS CONTENT!

Document the process you are going through by taking photos of the lash sets, before and afters, the product set up, the client setup, tools, and remember to document what you learn to repurpose it as content.

This will help to build trust with your potential clients, as you will start a presence from day one!

Tip #5 – Get to the money! Decide if you want to be an independent contractor, a W2 employee, or your own business!

Please, please, please look into the type of lash artist you want to be if you want to be an independent contractor or own your own business prepare to track all of your finances including courses, school, and anything to goes into becoming a lash artist because you will be paying taxes at the end of the year as a sole proprietor or 1099 employee.

These lash artists typically work for other lash artists or lash salons and receive a commission and tips on each lash set they do.

If taxes aren’t for you and you just want to lash for the love of lashing while receiving a steady paycheck and set hours working at a lash salon can also be great.

Some lash salons pay an hourly set pay and you get tips as well as benefits. Look into employment opportunities while building up your portfolio and expertise and find out what works best for you.
